    Walters leads way for Mavs’ comeback

    Ryan Walters scored two third-period goals Saturday night as UNO rallied from a 3-1, late second-period deficit for an important 5-3 victory over Nos. 14 and 15 Colorado College. Walters scored a short-handed goal to tie the game just 2:48 into the third period after stealing the puck from steady defenseman Gabe Guentzel and breaking away alone against goalie Josh Thorimbert. He beat him with a high backhander.

    Disallowed goal thwarts Mavericks' comeback bid

    UNO, playing from behind all night, appeared to have achieved a tie Friday in the first game of its crucial series with Colorado College, but a goal with 2:56 left in regulation was ruled to have been kicked into the goal intentionally by Dominic Zombo. The reversal helped Colorado College hold on for a 4-3 victory before 6,942 at World Arena, allowing the Tigers to take sole possession of fourth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Mavericks, who picked up three points in a crucial series at Michigan Tech last weekend, play their final road series of the regular season Friday and Saturday at slumping Colorado College, ranked 14th and 15th in the national polls.

Sophomore right winger Matt White skated in one-on-two against Michigan Tech's defensemen. "He beat the (first) defenseman, and he was going too fast for the other defenseman to slide over," UNO coach Dean Blais said. "He had about 3 or 4 inches to shoot at, and he found a way to get the puck in."

And the city will get a double dose. The official announcement came Tuesday that a doubleheader, with the Omaha Lancers facing the Lincoln Stars in the opening game, and the University of Nebraska at Omaha playing North Dakota in the second matchup, is set for Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at TD Ameritrade Park, the 24,000-seat stadium that is home to baseball's College World Series.

    Report: TD Ameritrade to host UNO, Lancer games

    Outdoor hockey is coming to TD Ameritrade Park next winter. UNO and the Omaha Lancers are set to play outdoor hockey games next season, against North Dakota and the Lincoln Stars, respectively, according to sources. A press conference to announce "a unique winter sporting event to be held at TD Ameritrade Park during 2013" is set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the downtown stadium.
