    SOFTBALL
    Mavs fall against Alabama State

    The UNO softball team finished play at the Lady Hornet Invitational with a 4-0 loss to host Alabama State on Saturday. The Mavs' second game of the day against Savannah State was canceled after heavy rains moved into the area. Lauren Larson went 3 for 3 for the Mavs (2-5), who finished with six hits against the Lady Hornets (1-6).

    UNO earns first two victories of season

    The UNO softball team picked up its first two wins as a Division I school over Division I opponents Friday night, knocking off Alabama State 12-4 in five innings and Savannah State 3-1 at the Lady Hornet Invitational. The Mavs improved to 2-4, while host Alabama State dropped to 0-6 and Savannah State fell to 2-4. UNO will play the same teams on Saturday in reverse order, facing Savannah State at 2 p.m. and Alabama State at 4.

    Mavericks picked to finish fourth

    The UNO softball team has been picked fourth in the Great West Conference preseason coaches’ poll. The league’s last two champions — Houston Baptist and North Dakota — shared the top spot in the rankings with 12 points apiece. Utah Valley is third with 11 points, while newcomer UNO tallied five points. The University of Nebraska at Omaha will play one year in the Great West Conference before beginning Summit League play next season.

    Mavs fall short

    The UNO softball team dropped its final two games at the UNI-Dome Classic at Bergstrom Indoor Practice Facility on Sunday, 2-1 to North Dakota and 3-2 to Northern Iowa. UNO began the day with the 2-1 loss to North Dakota. In the second game, UNI kept the Mavs’ would-be tying run at third base in the top of the seventh to take the 3-2 win.

    Mavs open season with pair of losses

    The UNO softball team opened its first season in Division I with a pair of losses at the UNI-Dome Classic at Iowa State on Saturday. The Mavs opened with a 7-1 loss to Green Bay before falling to Valparaiso 6-0. UNO had 13 hits in the game against Green Bay, but stranded 11 runners. Lauren Larson had lone RBI for the Mavs, singling home Lindsay Redding to put UNO up 1-0 in the first inning.

    UNO has six winners at Concordia meet

    UNO's Amanda Vorthmann set two meet records on her way to a pair of wins at the Concordia Indoor Invitational on Saturday. Sami Spenner posted wins in the long jump and triple jump as the Mavs earned six first-place finishes. Vorthmann won the 1,000 meters in 2 minutes, 59.95 seconds, then won the mile in 5:03.78. Other winners for UNO were Kathie-Lee Laidley in the 60-meter hurdles and Lauren Psota in the 400.

    Mavericks win two events at UNI meet

    The University of Nebraska at Omaha track and field team had to event. winners Saturday at Northern Iowa's Jack Jennett Invitational. Sami Spenner won the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 39 feet, 10½ inches — 9½ inches farther than her previous best.

    Mavs top Lopers in final dual

    The UNO swimming and diving team picked up a 132-100 win over the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Saturday in the Mavs' final regular-season meet of the season. UNO totaled nine event wins in the victory over the Lopers.

    Spenner finishs second in pentathlon

    Junior Sami Spenner posted the third-best pentathlon score in UNO history on her way to a second-place finish on the first day of competition on the Jack Jennett Invitational at Northern Iowa. Spenner's 3,810 put her behind only former national champion Anastasia Kyvelidou and Shannon Moore in school history. Spenner finished less than 200 points behind Northern Iowa's Olimpia Nowak, who finished in the top 15 in Division I in the event last season.

    UNO falls in final home meet

    UNO fell to Iowa State 154-110 on Friday in its final home meet of the season. Sophomores Kylie Rathbone won the 100-yard freestyle and Madeline Hutt captured the 100-yard breaststroke as the Mavericks honored four seniors: Kylie Hubbell, Colleen Klaiber, Ariel Lahowetz and Amanda Schulte.
