Mavs cruise in men's Sapp Fieldhouse finale

It was high on history, but low on drama. In the final scheduled men's basketball game at Sapp Fieldhouse, UNO cruised to an 85-68 victory over its shorthanded rival from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. An announced crowd of 1,949 turned out Wednesday for what also served as UNO's Alumni Night — with many former players on hand, including all-time scoring leader Dean Thompson and longtime coach Bob Hanson.

Mavs hang close, fade at end

The UNO men’s basketball team’s transition to Division I could be most easily summed up by the Mavericks’ game results this season. UNO entered Sunday’s contest with Division I independent Cal State-Bakersfield with a 1-12 record against D-I schools and a 9-3 record against all other opponents. That trend continued in front of 1,379 at Sapp Fieldhouse as the Mavs were able to stay with the Roadrunners, and at times were in control, but were unable to come up with plays...

"They look good on film, too," University of Nebraska at Omaha coach Derrin Hansen said. "We'll have our hands full."

None of the University of Nebraska at Omaha men's basketball players is tired — or tired of winning after Sunday's 79-68 victory against Doane gave the Mavericks their third win in five days. The 10-15 Mavs shot 50 percent for much of the game while steadily pulling away in front of 179 at Sapp Fieldhouse. The game was rescheduled from Saturday, when it was postponed by the snowstorm.
