It’s setting up for Adrian to be the anchor to the U.S. 400 freestyle relay team in London, if all goes as planned. He swam with that unit at the Beijing Games in 2008, but only in preliminaries. Adrian might be one of the best U.S. hopes in the 50-meter freestyle. He finished fourth in that event at the World Championships in 2011. His best finish at the U.S. Trials in 2008 also was fourth in the 100 free.
Sybil Bauer of the Illinois Athletic Club won the 100-meter backstroke at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. She was the first woman to break an existing men’s record (440-yard backstroke). Before she died of cancer in 1927, she was engaged to Chicago sportswriter and future television host Ed Sullivan.
