More than 20 artists will show works inspired by Omaha during the "We Are Omaha" art exhibit from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the inCommon offices at 1258 S. 13th St.
The free art show also will feature music by local performers Families, All Young Girls Are Machine Guns, Skypiper, Omaha Public Radio, Anniversaire and Brad Hoshaw.
Aromas Coffeehouse will provide coffee and Bliss Bakery and the Boiler Room will serve food.
The show is the idea of Calvin Smothers, community center director for inCommon, and artist-musician-coffee expert Leslie Wells. About a year ago, they talked about hosting an art show that had to do with one thing — Omaha.
"We love the city. We love art," Smothers said. "It was a perfect fit."
Smothers said he wanted to tap into that love for the art project. "Young people especially are prideful of their city," he said.
The artists have had several months to work on their pieces. The only stipulation was the Omaha tie.
"We expect so many great perspectives, talent and creativity to be all over the walls," Smothers said.
The media is mixed — everything from paintings and drawings to photography and instagrams (photos shared online and altered to look older by using an app).
There's even an interesting framed group of axes. Andrew Willoughby, Asher Connelly and Adam Tweedy find old axes, refurbish them and, at least in this case, mounted them like an installation.
All of the artwork will be on sale, Smothers said. The artist will keep 50 percent of the proceeds and donate 50 percent to inCommon's work to unite and strengthen vulnerable neighborhoods.
In addition to Smothers, Jewell and Fontenelle Axe Restoration, artists in the show include: Caleb Coppock, Watie White, Dave Koenig, Daniel Muller, Josh Powell, Daphe Eck, Megan Loudon Sanders, Mike Bauer, Jeff Spiehs, Sami Jones, Dave Nelson, What Cheer, Ben Peterson, Zach Reinhardt, Kacie Burkum, Beth Cavender, Ashlynn Neve, Bill Sitzman, RDQLUS, Caroline Funk, Vallerie Wallace Camp, William Holland and citymade.
