New Italian restaurant to Village Pointe

Bravo! Cucina Italiana is coming to Omaha.

The restaurant, described as "upscale affordable dining," will open in Village Pointe this fall adjacent to the shopping center's courtyard. The menu includes entrees like grilled steaks, chops, pizza and pasta. The Omaha location will also have an outdoor dining area.

The restaurant has locations in 19 other states around the country, and Bravo/Brio Restaurant group, who runs Bravo!, also runs Brio Tuscan Grille and Bon Vie Bistro.

Summer suds at Brix

Summer beers are on the menu this weekend at Brix.

For a $10 admission fee, visitors can try a long list of beers on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The tasting includes 25 brews, among them Abita Purple Haze, Big Sky Heavy Horse, Boulder Kinda Blue, Breckenridge Agave Wheat, Buffalo Bill's Orange Blossom, Emperian Super Nova, Goose Island Summertime, Lucky Bucket Wheat, New Belgium Shift, Odell Easy Street Wheat, Sam Adams Summer Ale, Schilling Bridge Lemon Lime Lager, Shiner Ruby Redbird, Shock Top Lemon Shandy, Sierra Nevada Kellerwiess, Ska True Blonde Ale, Spanish Peaks Honey Raspberry, Summer Shandy and Tommy Knocker Saison. Vote in pizza challenge

The 2012 World-Herald Omaha Pizza Challenge is under way, and if you vote, you could be eating a lot of free pizza.

Diners can vote online for the contenders and one lucky participant will be chosen at random to win a $200 gift certificate to the winning restaurant at the end of the challenge.

Participating restaurants include Bene Pizza & Pasta, Cascio's Steakhouse, Clancy's Pub, Cunningham's, Mangia Italiana, Old River Pizza Co., Orsi's Italian Bakery, Papa Murphy's, Portovino Ristorante, Red's Savoy Pizza, Sam & Louie's Pizzeria, The Pizza Pie Guys, The Pizza Shoppe, Varsity Roman Coin, Villagio Pizzeria and Zio's Pizza.

Round one of the contest continues through April 15. Round two begins April 16, round three begins April 20, the championship match begins April 23 and a winner will be announced on April 27.

Get tickets for 'Elevate'

The second Emerging Terrain "Elevate" dinner, slated to take place June 3, is coming together, and a laundry list of some of the city's top chefs are participating.

Earlier this week, Emerging Terrain announced the artist/chef teams for the dinner. The teams will design menus for "elevation stations" that will be on the 36th Street bridge during the event.

The topics of the second set of banners: land use, agriculture, food, and transportation.

Tickets for "Elevate" go on sale Monday at noon at the Emerging Terrain website, www.emergingterrain.org.

Nebraska Brewing Company and Tyson Arp will provide beer and water.

Dinner at Boiler Room

The Boiler Room is playing host to a wine dinner with the influential Kermit Lynch Winery.

On Wednesday, Lynch's midwest representative, Greg Powell, will be at the restaurant to serve a cross-section of wines that reflect what Kermit Lynch does best. Wines to be served at the dinner include a sparkling selection, a chardonnay, a beaujolais and a barolo.

The spring-influenced menu will feature pork, soft shell crab, ramps, morels and "what we believe is some of the best asparagus to be found anywhere," according to chef-owner Paul Kulik.

Closed for now

Finicky Franks, 9520 Calhoun Road, is temporarily closed for expansion. The owners hope to be open again by the end of April with a revised menu and additional seating. For questions, call 402-451-5555.

New special at Fleming's

Fleming's Steakhouse has a new special in which diners can pick a small plate and an oversize glass of wine for $24.95.

The deal is available for a limited time in the restaurant's bar and includes a choice of sliced filet mignon or filet mignon skewers, shrimp scampi skewers, petite lamb chops, seared ahi tuna, seared scallops or lobster tempura. A variety of red and white wines are available as part of the pairing.

Restaurant misidentified

Last week in our dining note about the Nebraska Beef Council's Best Burger in Nebraska contest, one of the restaurants was misidentified. Greta's Gourmet Butcher Shop, in Lincoln, is in the running for the award.
