Local chefs out of running in James Beard Award

Neither of the Omaha-based chefs in the semifinalist race for the James Beard Award made the cut.

Clayton Chapman, owner/chef at the Grey Plume, was a semifinalist in the Rising Star Chef of the Year category and
Paul Kulik, owner/chef at the Boiler Room, was a semifinalist in the Best Chef: Midwest category.

Chapman was nominated for the same award in 2011. This was Kulik's first nomination.

The finalists in the Best Chef: Midwest category are Justin Aprahamian of Sanford in Milwaukee; Gerard Craft of Niche in St. Louis; Colby Garrelts of Bluestem in Kansas City, Tory Miller of L'Etoile in Madison, Wisc.; and Lenny Russo of Heartland Restaurant and Farm Direct Market in St. Paul, Minn.

The finalists in the Rising Star Chef of the Year category are Dave Beran of Next in Chicago; Daniel Bowien of Mission Chinese Food in San Fransicso; Thomas McNaughton of flour + water in San Francisco, Christina Tosi of Momofuku Milk Bar in New York City; and Sue Zemanick of Gautreau's in New Orleans.

The James Beard Foundation Awards are the nation's most prestigious recognition program honoring people in the food and beverage industry.

This year, the foundation received more than 57,000 online entries, nearly a 50 percent increase from the previous year and the most in the Awards' history.

The winners will be announced May 7.
